Did I tell you I love kimchi!? There are sooo many reasons why kimchi makes me happy. Here are five things I love about kimchi.
1. It’s a taste enhancer
Kimchi makes everything taste better! It adds brightness, brineiness and spiciness to everything you eat. One of my favorite ways to eat kimchi is to take a bite of kimchi between bites of food. It cleanses the palate, cuts through the fat, and helps digest food! A few of my favorite combinations are kimchi on pizza and kimchi on a juicy burger.
2. It’s crunchy
Kimchi starts off super crunchy and that’s my favorite time to eat it. Kimchi gives you that extra bite and flavorful crunch that is so satisfying and something I crave while eating.
3. It lasts a long time
Believe it or not but kimchi can be made, stored, and eaten for up to 3 years! Crazy, right!? Some Koreans honestly believe that it never goes bad and only gets better with time. My kimchi just never lasts that long because I end up eating it too fast. I usually make a batch and store it in the refrigerator for up to 6 months. That means it’s always available to enjoy.
4. It’s spicy
I think everything tastes better with a little dash of spice. The great thing about kimchi is that you can have it firery hot or mild as a cucumber. Traditional kimchi is red and spicy but milder forms exist which are refreshing and more vinger-y. In the end, it can be made perfect to your liking! Personally, I like mine deep red and spicy!
5. It’s good for you!
Isn’t it rare for something to taste good and also be good for you!? Well, it’s true. Kimchi is that special something! Kimchi is a product of a chemical process called fermentation. Fermentation creates the kind of bacteria that is good for you. And yes, certain bacteria can be beneficial to your health. Kimchi, contains the kind of gut bacteria that help with digestion. So, going back to the top – kimchi doesn’t only improve flavor, it also helps digest all of the pizza and burgers we eat. So no tummy aches. Overall, it’s a win-win!
